One More Baby
While watching the movie, Hacksaw Ridge, I could not help but relate it to what I experience at the abortion clinics as a sidewalk counselor.
Hacksaw Ridge is a true story about Desmond Doss, a soldier who refused, because of personal convictions, to harm anyone or even to pick up a gun. He had joined the military in hopes of becoming a medic to help the injured in battle.
After repeated attempts by his superiors to force him out of military service, he won the right to continue as a medic without taking up arms.
Then he and his fellow soldiers found themselves caught in the middle of one of the bloodiest battles of WWII in Okinawa. They were outnumbered, and unable to hold the Ridge. They were ordered to fall back when he heard a voice calling, “Help me.”
He turned and ran back into the middle of exploding grenades and artillery fire. After pulling the first wounded soldier out from behind enemy lines and lowering him down to safety with a rope, he prayed, “Please God, help me get one more.”
Then he headed back into the flames and the smoke. Again, and again. He was exhausted and his hands were bleeding from the ropes. Each time, as he would lower another man down, he would repeat, “One more, help me get one more.”
He never gave up. With no consideration for his own safety, at the very risk of his own life, he went back 75 times and rescued 75 soldiers!
Before it was over, he was wounded by a grenade, and hit by snipers.
If you have been sidewalk counseling for any length of time you know, like me, you have found yourself repeatedly praying, “Just one more baby Lord, please give me just one more baby.”
You heard their silent “Help me.”
To you I say, keep going back! Never give up! Keep going against the mounting opposition, the discouragement, the possible risk to your own freedom, and certainly against your own comfort.
Desmond Doss received the much-deserved Medal of Honor. Your award will not be pinned on your chest, it will be held in your arms.
Keep going back and keep asking the Lord for “one more baby.” It is a prayer He wants to answer to the saving of the child, for your encouragement, and for His glory!
Onward Christian Soldier!
